Joy in Motion: WEEK TWO

Every Journey Has a Story

This week I added just 48.8 kilometres to our Joy in Motion journey.

But some weeks can't be measured by kilometres.

They are measured by conversations.

By memories.

By discovering that behind every story...there is another story waiting to be told.

Returning to my birthplace of Manville, Alberta, became much more than a trip home. It became a journey back into my family's story.

As I walked gravel roads, wandered pastures, sat around kitchen tables, and shared meals with cousins, nieces, aunts, uncles, and family members I was meeting for the very first time, something remarkable happened.

I listened.

And the stories began to unfold.

Stories about my great-grandmother, Marion Clark, who journeyed west 120 years ago to establish our family's homestead. Stories of courage, sacrifice, heartbreak, perseverance, faith, and community. Stories that somehow had been waiting all these years to be heard.

What surprised me most was not what I learned about my family.

It was what I learned about myself.

My childhood became complicated after my dad stepped away from our family when I was very young. For many years, it was easy to believe that those early chapters somehow defined the whole story.

This week reminded me that they don't.

It is never too late to reconnect with your family's story.

Never too late to understand the quarry from which you were hewn.

Never too late to discover that you carry far more of your family's strengths, resilience, humour, faith, and determination than you ever imagined.

As I listened to story after story, I realized that we are often far more connected than we know. We simply need to slow down long enough to hear one another.

Perhaps that's the real gift of walking.

Walking creates space.

Space to notice.

Space to remember.

Space to ask questions.

Space for conversations that have been waiting a lifetime to happen.

As our Joy in Motion journey continues, I have been so humbled by the number of people who are registering, stepping out, and choosing to go the distance with us. Some are giving financially. Others are lacing up their walking shoes or hopping on their bikes. Every act of generosity, every kilometre, every encouraging word matters.

My hope is that as you journey with us this summer, you'll discover more than new places or new kilometres.

I hope conversations will unfold.

I hope old stories will be rediscovered.

I hope relationships will deepen.

I hope you'll discover something new about yourself.

Because I am beginning to believe that the greatest journeys don't simply change the world around us...

They change us.

It reminds me of the beautiful picture in Exodus 35. When God invited His people to build something greater than themselves, everyone came with willing hearts. Some brought resources. Some brought skills. Others simply brought themselves.

Together, they accomplished what none of them could have achieved alone.

Thank you for walking with us.

Let's keep moving with joy.

The journey is far from over.
